We haven’t seen the last of Comic-Con@Home: The San Diego Comic-Con announced yesterday that this year’s convention will again be a virtual event. In a statement, the organizers said, “While we are buoyed by the rollout of the vaccine and the growing number of individuals being inoculated, it appears that July will still be too early to safely hold an in-person event of the magnitude of Comic-Con.”
This year’s virtual event will be pared back to three days, July 23-25. “The challenges of this past year and the multiple postponements of our two largest events have left us with limited financial resources,” organizers noted. (They aren’t the only ones; the lack of in-person events is a financial strain for the vendors who count on these cons for a large chunk of their annual sales.)
While July’s event will be entirely online (and free), the San Diego Comic Convention also announced plans for an in-person, three-day event in San Diego in November. Those SDCC attendees who rolled their 2021 badge purchases over to 2022 will eventually have an option to roll on toward the November event, or to request a refund. (The same goes for exhibitors.) Details, as the organization works out this process, will be available on the Comic-Con website.
